PETALING JAYA: The Selangor government will decide whether to demolish or to refurbish the Shah Alam Stadium in the coming months as repairs could cost up to RM787mil.

Selangor Mentri Besar Datuk Seri Amirudin Shari said the decision to repair or rebuild the 28-year-old stadium would be determined based on the cost after state secretary Datuk Haris Kasim presented a letter of intent to Malaysian Resources Corporation Berhad (MRCB) executive vice president Datuk Dell Akbar Khan Hyder Khan.

Amirudin said the state government is not ruling out demolishing and rebuilding both the Shah Alam Stadium and the indoor Malawati Stadium to solve its past plaguing issues like flooding and add value to the area.

"Some of the issues we have found is that we might have to raise the stadium's foundation to prevent flooding from happening again and replace the polycarbonate roof entirely, which only has a lifespan of about 15 years.

"We have been exploring the possibility of rebuilding or continuing to repair the stadium since 2013 and even then, the Public Works Department estimated repair cost at around RM350mil.

"Today, we estimate that the costs for a total refurbishment including solving the flooding issues and replacing the roof will cost RM787mil," said Amirudin during a ceremony at the State Secretariat Building in Shah Alam on Friday (July 15).

He added that MRCB was identified to provide a proposal after the government had called for and studied 15 proposals for the project since last year and evaluated each company on its ability to complete the project successfully.

MRCB is expected to present to the state government with a detailed proposal in the next few months.

"The development project will be a public-private partnership with a win-win solution. As far as the state government is concerned, no public funds will be used for this project," Amirudin said, adding that project cost will be capped at RM787mil and borne by the developer through a land swap deal.

The project will leverage on the area's existing draw, such as its strategic location and proximity to a station under the LRT3 line which is expected to be operational by 2025.

Amirudin also invited the public to share their feedback on the proposed development of the sports complex by sending their ideas to Kompleks Sukan Shah Alam digital platforms at @KompleksSukanSA on Facebook and Twitter.

An exhibition on the sports complex development will also be held in September for the public to have a better understanding of the issues surrounding the proposed development plan.

The public will also have an opportunity to share their feedback during the exhibition.
